... witty and engaging;
a promising first outing by a poet with a clear, precocious voice. A truly
significant achievement.

The poems here take
us a step further. They continually beat back the void. Engage them and
let them engage you.

This is one of the
most remarkable first collections I have come across
Tolu's poetry
is sturdy, full-blooded and often humorous. While reading this poetry,
one always feels that Tolu Ogunlesi is a man whose personality is much
bigger than his art; one senses a huge power bottled up, struggling to
express itself. We can expect much from this young poet.

Anyone who has had
their breath taken away by the bare stoicness of Ogunlesi's poetry or
has enjoyed the perfect symmetry of his short stories is well aware that
Nigeria is once again on the brink of producing a son of Soyinka, Chinweizu
and Achebe. This is truly a gifted writer. I now look for everything he
writes.

Ogunlesi's value as
a poet is not dependent on the drastic need for voices ... Yes, memorable
metaphor, a fine ear and strong, live feeling are brought to the task.
They also promise an impressive development.

If poetry is a reflection
of the soul, then Tolulope Gbenga Ogunlesi's poems reflect a soul much
older than his twenty-one years ... Tolulope tells of the African experience,
an echo that translates easily to the African American experience, as
well. Tolulope's work brings to mind my favorite poet, Maya Angelou. I
see in his words, a similar effortless charm and gritty grasp of reality.
