From
her earliest years, Wilma Clark was fascinated by the written word and
pored over copious quantities of books as a child. Later, when she learned
to read, her enjoyment was much enhanced!
Having committed all the words in the English dictionary
to memory, she decided to broaden her horizons and so went off to university
to study French and Russian she could read more books that way.
As an added bonus, her linguistic horizons expanded
physically as well as mentally and, combining study with travel, she
took off for Metz, St Petersburg, Kiev and, basically, after that, she
just forgot to get off the bus, graduating not so much the expected
linguist-hoping-to-be-a-spy as more of a country-bagging
jack-of-all-trades.
It turned out to be a fun result for Wilma as, led
quite literally by her linguistic tongue, she danced with tarantulas
in a jungle in Mexico, tangoed with a wee bit of nuclear frisson in
Kiev (post-Chernobyl), faced death-inducing camel spiders in Kazakstan,
a wee bit of tsunami in Baku just a few highlights amongst her
dalliances in more peaceful corners of the world such as Wellington,
Lisbon, Rome, Boston, etc. Her working days have encompassed anything
and everything from cabbage-picking and gardening to the rather more
sedate fields of translation and law ( she considers a salary a helpful
addition to her wardrobe on occasion).
And so we come to writing. Yes, she loves it, and
has done ever since she was able to hold a pencil the right way up.
Poems, short stories, journalling, websites, the odd article or two
and last but not least, a novel Jahred & The
Magi published by BeWrite Books.
