Arthur Allwright

Arthur Allwright

Arthur Allwright – co-author of five earlier publications – at the insistence of his grandchildren wrote A Stranger and Afraid from first-hand experience. He did it to tell a new generation, to whom World War Two is as remote as any other dusty schoolroom history, what it was really like to be a little stranger in an even stranger land, as battle raged back in his home city streets.

He also produced this unique account to remind an older generation of its own ravaged childhood.

A first rate story teller, who shares his story and anecdotes with school assemblies and other groups, he retired twelve years ago and now – busier than ever – concentrates on writing and charity work.At seventy one years of age, he shares a life filled with memory of the past and hope for the future with his wife and close family of two children and seven grandchildren in the beautiful, rural North Downs of Kent in England.

A Stranger and Afraid by Arthur Allwright
A Stranger and Afraid

Tens of thousands of youngsters are evacuated to the English countryside as Hitler's bombers prepare to rain death on their city streets.
But the refugee trains with their cargo of frightened children often take a route from one hell to another.
Arthur, an eight-year-old evacuee from inner London, is thrust upon strict Quaker, anti-war, relatives in a remote village where locals speak such a strong dialect it's like a foreign language and where a vindictive headmaster delights in handing out brutal corporal punishment to the unwelcome little 'vaccies'.
Arthur experiences the depths of despair, the bursts of innocent pleasure, the terrors and the uncertainties of a forgotten war generation too young to fight, too precious to die, too bewildered to understand.
And every single word is true! This is young Arthur Allwright's story.

A moving tale, which shows the resilience of the human spirit.
